2009, the return of Azzurra
“We will face this breathtaking series of regattas with the humility of newcomers but with the conviction that we are worthy of participating”. This was how H.H. the Aga Khan summed up the philosophy of Azzurra at her debut in the America’s Cup of 1983.
Almost thirty years since Italy’s debut in the America’s Cup, Azzurra is competing again on international waters driven by the same spirit. The new Azzurra was born from the collaboration between the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Giovanni Maspero of Joe Fly: the talent of the sailing team and the experience of the YCCS has produced a young and solid team that is ready to compete at the highest levels.
The new, all-Italian Azzurra debuted at the Louis Vuitton Trophy in Nice in November 2009. Francesco Bruni and his team exceeded all expectations and took victory in the first stage of this prestigious international competitive circuit in which the world’s best match racing skippers participate. In the final Azzurra defeated the favourites for the event, Louis Vuitton Cup winners Emirates Team New Zealand, 2-0.
Azzurra was returned to the international sailing scene for the second Louis Vuitton Trophy event which was held in New Zealand in March 2010. The team did not manage a repeat performance but achieved an excellent third place following a long series of thrilling matches.
Azzurra also participates in other regattas on the international match racing circuit - in March 2010 the team won the renowned Congressional Cup in Long Beach, California – and in various legs of the World Match racing Tour 2010.
